Product Description:

Whether navigating tempests in the boardroom or exploring reefs in deep blue waters, the Baume & Mercier Capeland (model 8319) automatic diving watch will withstand the roughest seas. Styled with a flair for everyday professional settings, it's designed for professional diving experiences with a water resistance of 1000 meters (3300 feet). It comes with a black Toile de Voile strap, made of durable, satiny nylon with yellow contrast stitching, as well as a black rubber strap with an adjustable Flexifit clasp to fit over diving gear. It also features a watch case made of titanium--which is nearly 50 percent lighter than steel, but 30 percent stronger. It's also particularly resistant to salt water corrosion, as well as hypo-allergenic.

The large, round watch case measures 45mm wide (1.77 inches) and it's topped by a unidirectional rotating bezel with embossed elapsed time markings. The textured yellow carbon fiber dial face features large luminous dial markers and dagger-shaped hands (with seconds hand) as well as small minute indexes on the outer ring of the dial with Arabic 5-minute markers. Other features include a date window at 3 o'clock, screw-in fluted crown, and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. This watch comes with a certificate of authenticity.

The dial is stamped with Baume & Mercier's signature Greek letter Phi (Φ), which symbolizes the harmonious lines and a perfect balance in design that the company constantly strives for. It's long been used to denote the golden number, or ratio, which suggests a natural balance between symmetry and asymmetry.

An automatic (or self-winding) watch is fitted with a device (rotor) that automatically winds the spring by using the force of gravity. It needs no battery, but it will stop if you have been physically inactive for an extended period of time. Remember--as long as you're moving, the watch will keep moving. Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the self-winding mechanism in 1770. It worked on the same principle as a modern pedometer, and was designed to wind as the owner walked. The Geneva Society of Arts reported in 1776 that fifteen minutes walking was all that was necessary to wind the watch sufficiently for eight days.

About Baume & Mercier
Baume & Mercier has a rich history in storied tradition of Swiss watchmaking, now over 170 years. In 1830, brothers Louis Victor and Pierre-Joseph-Celestin Baume established the Baume Freres Watch firm in the Swiss Jura region--the heart of the Swiss watch industry. As business flourished in Europe a grandson of the founder, William Baume met Paul Mercier, a great lover of the arts and in 1918 they created a business partnership. The contrast of the rigorous, precise Baume with the artistic, free thinking Mercier fused form and function to create the traditions of perfection, quality, and luxury that still exist today.
