Baume & Mercier Men's Capeland Automatic Watch 8224 By: Baume & Mercier ![]() Price: $1995.00 Prices subject to change Product Description: Stately and simply elegant, the Baume & Mercier Capeland automatic men's watch (model 8224) is a fashion investment that will pay dividends for decades to come. A great match for the active gentleman, it's also a worthy complement for black tie evenings and boardroom meetings. Both the watch case and the bracelet band are made of high-grade stainless steel, with the band composed of small, highly polished links and joined by a hidden, folding clasp. The polished silver watch case measures 39mm wide (1.54 inches) and it's topped by a brushed, gray bezel. The slate gray dial features a full Arabic numeral display in stylized Roman script, a black small seconds subdial above 6 o'clock, dotted small minute indexes on the outer rim of the dial, and luminous, dagger-shaped silver hands. Other features include a date window at 3 o'clock, screw-in fluted crown, and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. This watch comes with a certificate of authenticity. The dial is stamped with Baume & Mercier's signature Greek letter Phi (Φ), which symbolizes the harmonious lines and a perfect balance in design that the company constantly strives for. It's long been used to denote the golden number, or ratio, which suggests a natural balance between symmetry and asymmetry. An automatic (or self-winding) watch is fitted with a device (rotor) that automatically winds the spring by using the force of gravity. It needs no battery, but it will stop if you have been physically inactive for an extended period of time. Remember--as long as you're moving, the watch will keep moving. Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the self-winding mechanism in 1770. It worked on the same principle as a modern pedometer, and was designed to wind as the owner walked. The Geneva Society of Arts reported in 1776 that fifteen minutes walking was all that was necessary to wind the watch sufficiently for eight days. About Baume & Mercier |
