Product Description:

Classically designed with a retro-modern sensibility, the Baume & Mercier Hampton Spirit automatic watch for men (model 8254) offers a commanding yet stylish presence on your wrist. Made of high grade stainless steel, the wide, rectangular watch case measures 37mm wide (1.46 inches) and it's topped by a highly polished bezel. The silver dial face has a spirograph-like Guilloche pattern that's further accented by mix of shiny silver stick and Arabic numeral markers. It's topped by a domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Other features include a brown alligator leather strap with tonal stitching, date window at 6 o'clock, silver Dauphine hands (with seconds hand), and water resistance to 50 meters (165 feet)--suitable for swimming.

The dial is stamped with Baume & Mercier's signature Greek letter Phi (Φ), which symbolizes the harmonious lines and a perfect balance in design that the company constantly strives for. It's long been used to denote the golden number, or ratio, which suggests a natural balance between symmetry and asymmetry.

An automatic (or self-winding) watch is fitted with a device (rotor) that automatically winds the spring by using the force of gravity. It needs no battery, but it will stop if you have been physically inactive for an extended period of time. Remember--as long as you're moving, the watch will keep moving. Swiss watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet invented the self-winding mechanism in 1770. It worked on the same principle as a modern pedometer, and was designed to wind as the owner walked. The Geneva Society of Arts reported in 1776 that fifteen minutes walking was all that was necessary to wind the watch sufficiently for eight days.

About Baume & Mercier
Baume & Mercier has a rich history in storied tradition of Swiss watchmaking, now over 170 years. In 1830, brothers Louis Victor and Pierre-Joseph-Celestin Baume established the Baume Freres Watch firm in the Swiss Jura region--the heart of the Swiss watch industry. As business flourished in Europe a grandson of the founder, William Baume met Paul Mercier, a great lover of the arts and in 1918 they created a business partnership. The contrast of the rigorous, precise Baume with the artistic, free thinking Mercier fused form and function to create the traditions of perfection, quality, and luxury that still exist today.
